When Bettina moved to New York for Graduate school, she looked for something to photograph that would help her connect to her new surroundings in lieu of the nature she enjoyed in the South. In an otherwise bleak/scary/dirty neighborhood, she found vibrancy, humor and human expression in these unlikely sources: fire hydrants. The focus has stayed with her and became a larger symbol of finding beauty in small things, even the dankest of places/situations/times.
